Map of Nebraska Cities

Looking at a Nebraska map reveals a state with many unique and interesting cities. Nicknamed the Cornhusker State, it is the 16th largest state in the Union but ranks 38th in population and there is not one single, large metropolis but, rather, many smaller sized cities. Located on the Great Plains, the map reveals a state that is rectangular in shape with a small square cut out of its’ southwestern corner. Although it is completely land locked, it contains more miles of rivers than in any other state.

The majority of the population lives in the eastern part of the state and the biggest city, Omaha, is located on the Missouri River which serves as Nebraska’s eastern border. With a population of close to a half million people, it is the state’s industrial, cultural, and transportation hub. On the riverfront, there are fine restaurants, shops, and many water activities.

Looking at a map of Nebraska cities, the main corridor that runs through the state is I-80. Starting at Ogallala on the west end, this highway runs the entire length of the state, over 330 miles, and continues on through Omaha. As a major though fare in the state, many towns are clustered along I-80. From Ogallala heading east to North Platte, then to Kearney, Grand Island, Lincoln, and Omaha the largest cities are located on this corridor.

Lincoln, the state capitol, is just an hour’s drive away from Omaha to the south and west. The state government is located here as is the state’s largest school, the University of Nebraska. While this is a fine academic school, it is known more for its powerhouse football teams.

Continuing west on I-80, Grand Island is the next large city, some 100 miles west of Lincoln; then, 50 miles further, is Kearney. One of the more interesting sightseeing attractions here is The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument. This archway spans I-80 and is an interactive tour of the plight of the pioneers that traveled through the state.

Studying a map of Nebraska cities shows that Kearney is nearly halfway through the state. Continuing on to the west, North Platte is a major city for western Nebraska. Although a major railroad hub, North Platte offers many outdoor activities. Hunting, fishing, and camping are popular attractions.

The state has many great places to live with many small and medium sized towns. McCook, for example, is a town of about 8,000 located in southwestern Nebraska that offers a close knit community that is involved in local events.

In the northwestern part of the state is Scottsbluff, a city of about 15,000. With many interesting rock formations, including Chimney Rock, and many national forests and state parks, there is a lot to see and do.

Looking at a map of the cities, it is apparent that the majority of the towns are clustered on the eastern portion of the state, basically from Kearney east. However, all the cities of Nebraska are great places to live.
