When moving to a new state, it's important to make sure that your vehicle is re-registered and a new driver's license is obtained. The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles has several locations to assist new residents with this important task.
Time is of the essence at the Nebraska DMV, as new residents have 30 days to obtain a new resident Driver's License, Title, and Registration for all applicable vehicles brought into the State of Nebraska. In addition, certain vehicles are required to undergo a thorough inspection.
In order to obtain a new driver's license, a new resident must visit the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles location in their county to fill out a driver's license application and present valid proof of identification. Proof of identification would be your current driver's license or other acceptable personal identification including your full name and date-of-birth.
Before obtaining a new title and registration for your vehicle, you must have a Vehicle Inspection performed by the County Sheriff's office. There are some cases when your vehicle may be exempt from this inspection, so you should contact your local DMV for more information.
After completing your vehicle inspection, you will require a new title for your vehicle. You must surrender your old title and present proof of ownership to obtain a new title in Nebraska. Other documents will also be required on a case-by-case basis. A $10.00 title fee must also be paid to the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles.
Vehicle registrations are issued by the county DMV office where the applicant resides, or where the vehicle is held most of the time. In order to register your vehicle with the Nebraska DMV, you must provide proof of insurance, your Nebraska Certificate of Title, and proof of all applicable tax payments. If the vehicle is leased, the leasing agreement must also be presented. Taxes and fees paid on the vehicle vary by county, so it's strongly recommended that you contact your county treasurer for such information. After all the paperwork is completed and the fees are paid, you will be given your license plates, registration paperwork and validation tabs indicating when your registration expires. At such a time, you will need to return to the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles to renew your registration, or you can renew online.
If you are a member of the United States Military stationed in Nebraska, but you call another state home, you are not be required to register your vehicle in the State of Nebraska. You are permitted to continue using your out-of-state plates, or you may obtain Nebraska license plates tax free from the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. However, there are certain forms of paperwork that are required. If you are currently a member of the U.S. Armed Forces and wish to register your vehicle in Nebraska, it is recommended that you contact the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles location in your county for more information.
