Nebraska's Humane Society bills itself as "Nebraska's Voice for Animals," and the society welcomes new residents to the area, and invites you to tour the facilities and adopt a new pet today.

Location and Hours

The Nebraska Humane Society is located at 8929 Fort Street in Omaha. Its adoption hours are Noon-7pm Tuesdays through Fridays, 10am-4pm Saturdays, and Noon-4pm Sundays, and you need to start your adoption at least 1/2 hour before closing. The Humane Society has all types of animals available for adoption, from dogs and cats to horses and rodents.

Stray Kennel Hours

The Society also operates the only stray kennel in Douglas and Sarpy Counties, so if you lose a pet, chances are it will end up at the Humane Society. The stray kennel is open Noon-7pm Weekdays and Noon-4pm Saturdays/Sundays.

Adopting a Pet

You can adopt a pet from the Nebraska Humane Society, it's easy, and it gives a needy animal a good, safe home. You'll fill out a pet matching questionnaire, talk with an adoption counselor, and then you can choose up to three animals to meet. You need to be at least 19 years old to adopt, everyone in the family needs to meet the animal, and if you already have a dog, your dog will need to meet the new arrival. You'll need to spend 30 minutes to an hour at the Humane Society to adopt your new pet.

Adoption Fees

Dogs cost $135, Puppies cost $155, Cats cost $80, Kittens cost $120, Mice cost $1, Rats, Gerbils, Hamsters, Guinea Pigs, Small Turtles, and Finches cost $5. Nebraska Humane Society Doves and Canaries cost $10, Parakeets, Rabbits, and Box Turtles cost $15, Lovebirds, Cockatiels, Ferrets, and Chinchillas cost $25, and Conures and Quaker Parrots cost $75. High-profile pets cost more, and there is a $10 transfer fee for most pets. The adoption fees do not include taxes or licensing fees.

Training and Other Services

If you have an unruly pet, the Society can help there, too! They offer training and behaviour classes, dog day care, and health care at the Humane Society, too, and often, it costs less than other facilities who offer these services. They also offer programs for kids, seniors, and teachers.

Special Events

If you'd like to support the Nebraska Humane Society, be sure to sign up to volunteer your time and the shelter. You can also make a donation to the Society, even if you can't volunteer. Or, you can attend one of their special events throughout the year, like Dining With Dogs, take part in the Walk for Animals or Black Tie and Tails, or buy some plants at their annual spring plant sale, Plants for Pooches. What ever you do, get involved with the Society, because they need help from the community to continue all the very good work they do for Nebraska's strays and homeless pets.

The Nebraska Humane Society is the place to visit if you lose your beloved pet, or you want to add a loving animal to your home. The talented professionals will asses your pet personality and recommend just the right pet for you and your family.
