The Nebraska Humane Society Omaha is a no-suffering shelter that promotes responsible pet ownership, provides education, gives sanctuary to lost or abandoned animals, and facilitates pet adoptions.
The shelter was founded in 1875 and is the fifth oldest Humane Society in the country. It is a private, non-profit organization that is funded by private donations and run by a professional staff and a corps of volunteers. Every animal that comes to the shelter is cared for, given medical treatment, and if possible, adopted.
Animals' health and temperment are evaluated, and those that meet the requirements enter into the adoption program. Animals stay at the shelter until they are adopted. All pets are spayed or neutered, and microchipped before leaving the shelter. The Nebraska Humane Society Omaha works with each family wishing to adopt to help determine the right animal for their household -- breed, activity level, and age are all factors to consider when choosing the right family companion. Adopting families are encouraged to attend an obedience class, and the society's free behavior helpline is available for training advice and tips.
In addition to pet adoption services, the Humane Society provides pet owners with Bone Jour doggie daycare, and Manners 'N More obedience classes. For kids who love animals, they can attend the shelter's summer program, Camp Kindness. The Nebraska Humane Society Omaha also provides animal control services for much of the metro area. Each of these efforts support the shelter's mission, and provide much needed revenue. You can also visit the facility's retail or online shop for any of your critter's needs -- all proceeds help support the shelter.
Although the shelter receives revenues from its existing programs, private donations and volunteer staff are essential to keep the organization running and allows the society to take their programs to the next level. Combatting pet overpopulation is a goal of the shelter, as unwanted pets are a primary reason animals are abandoned. In 2004, the Nebraska Humane Society Omaha began the SNAP (Spay/Neuter a Pet) program, allowing 2000 low-income families to receive free pet sterilization. The Nebraska Humane Society also offers a number of community programs for children, teachers, and seniors. Visit the web site or stop by the shelter for more information.
The mission of the Nebraska Humane Society Omaha is to put itself out of business. If the unwanted pet population can be reduced, lost pets more readily found through microchipping, and behavior problems controlled through training, far fewer animals would need to be cared for by the shelter.
Welcome to the area, and welcome to the Nebraska Humane Society Omaha! Please see our web site for licensing and ordinance information for your pet, and feel free to come by for a visit. Donations and volunteers are always welcome.
